Working Step Five
Working Step Five
We admitted to ourselves, to another human being, and to a Reality greater than ourselves the exact nature of these patterns.
This work is done with a sponsor or trusted guide.
To ourselves
Before we speak to anyone else, we practice telling the truth to ourselves.
Read back through your Step Four without minimizing or exaggerating. Simply notice what is there.
Is there anything you have been softening—telling yourself a slightly better version of?
Is there anything you left out? Can you name what kept you from including it?
As you read your inventory, what happens inside you?
Can you stay with what you see without defending yourself—or condemning yourself?
To another human being
What are you most afraid of saying out loud?
What do you believe will happen if someone hears it?
The person who hears your Step Five matters. You are looking for someone who can simply stay—not fix, not advise, not judge. Simply be present with what you bring.
To a Reality greater than ourselves
Step Five invites us to speak not only to another person, but in the presence of something larger—whatever we have come to call God, Source, Love, Presence, or simply the awareness that does not turn away.
This does not require a formal ritual. It may be as simple as a moment of acknowledgment before you begin—a recognition that you are not speaking into emptiness, that what you share is held in something wider than the room.
The Spirit of Step Five
Shame survives in secrecy. What is spoken in the presence of another person who stays begins to change.
This is not because confession has magic properties. It is because the thing we most feared—being fully seen and found unacceptable—turns out not to be true. The pattern we carried alone turns out to be something others have carried too.
That discovery is not a small thing. It may be the most direct experience of love the program offers—not love as sentiment, but love as the recognition that we are not as separate, or as uniquely broken, as we believed.
What changes in Step Five is not the past.
What changes is the certainty that you must carry it alone.
